The Flu 2011: Update

We were hit hard with some kind of flu bug this past week. As I posted a few days ago it all started Friday night and by Sunday night both kids were pale as ghosts with fevers and the whole kit.

Mommy guilt stepped in when K missed a few days of school. I know we kept her home because she was seriously not in a condition to be at school, she had no energy etc but that part of me felt bad she was missing out on her lessons. We end up reading books and pointing out her “snap words” in cases like these.

It’s hard when both kids are home and neither one feels good. They get on eachothers nerves being crabby and sick. Not fun for anyone, especially mom and dad who are hearing it ;).

Finally Friday rolls along and both kids were feeling much better. K wanted to go to school for what they call “Friday Funtubs” where at the end of the day they get to choose a toy from the “Funtubs” to play with and they are allowed to bring something in to show the class.

So, since the fever went down and she wasn’t violently coughing anymore she went to school. Unfortunately we missed when the pizza day forms went home and poor K had a meat sandwich for lunch while everyone else had pizza. Hey, at least I packed her cookies! We can thank the flu for K blaming missing pizza day on us! We did get pizza for the kids for supper but I can see why she was upset being the only kid with a lunch made by mom on pizza day. 😦

Other than that episode, it seems that nasty virus has left the building. Knock on wood.

I’m lucky, hubby and I had a couple of days where we didn’t feel 100% but not nearly as sick as the kids were.

Happy the kids are better, it’ll be easier to get things back into routine (again!) having them back to healthy.

Let’s hope this is the first and last strain of flu virus for winter 2011!

Premiere evening Sex And The City style

Last night I attended the premiere of the much anticipated sequel to one of my fav movies (and TV series) Sex and The City 2. Having luckily won tickets the day before, I brought one of my good friends for a special evening out – Sex And The City style!

It was all thanks to @KelliDaisy and the wonderful people at Billings Bridge for creating an amazing evening for us ladies to enjoy here in Ottawa. And enjoy we did, it was a wonderful evening.

Entering the World Exchange Plaza theater almost brought you into a mini world of glamour – everybody dressed their most fabulous. Set up was a wonderful display of candy, “Sex and The City” water, and yes even “Sex and the City” chocolate bars for us to enjoy. There was even a treat to have an express hair makeover by Scwartzkopf.

When we got to our seats we had a swag bag surprise waiting for us – that was pretty sweet!

The movie itself was great, a little long (so use the washroom before) but great! I won’t ruin it but it had everything Sex and the city should have plus a few surprises along the way as our favourite four fabulous New Yorkers embark on new life journies with marriages, kids, over worked careers and our worst enemy as women, menopause.

The story itself was different having the girls whisked away to the middle east to a culture out of their worlds and the fashion was interesting to say the least. There were a lot of tear jerking moments and moments you just have to laugh out loud at the crazy antics these ladies get themselves into.

Overall I give this movie a great review — without spilling any surprises, you’ll have to go see it for yourself.

I read some negative reviews about this movie and I have to say these people obviously aren’t SATC fans (or women for that matter! No offense to the guys who’ve seen it & liked it) because I thought it was great and by the sound of the theater so did almost everyone else who attended. It followed up from the first movie which followed up from the TV series. So if you are a die-hard SATC fan like me you’ll love it!

I really enjoyed the evening all in all. Saw a great movie with great company, a girls night out I’ve needed for a while. It felt good not to worry or feel that mommy-guilt for wanting to go out and enjoy myself. The only part I’m disapointed in is not getting the chance to meet and greet with some of you met via Twitter, maybe next time ladies 😦

One final thank you to everyone who made this possible including my good friend Tina for joining me and my loving Hubby who took care of everything at home while Mom had an evening out
:-).

Until next time — keep dreaming

Beat the rain

Today’s weather was really weird. It was blue skys in the morning with fluffy white clouds. I managed to wash and hang a load of bedclothes out on my line to dry in the breeze that picked up in the afternoon.
Thunder storms for some of the region were announced via the weather network and various sources on Twitter, so we anticipated a storm.
My daughter wanted to ride her bike before it started to rain. She needs a new girl bike – the other blue one we have “is for boys” so she chose her old Dora bike – it’s going in our upcoming garage sale, too small for her but anyway she was only riding the thing around the driveway.

Daddy set her up with her helmet and his set of riding rules, she’s still learning.
With that she was off doing laps while daddy cut the grass and I went to tend to little man. After daddy was done cutting the grass I went out and watched her ride around.
She was so proud! It brought back memories of feeling the joy of learning to ride a bike – I’m rusty these days.

She beat the rain, by minutes but she had a fun time even if it was just outside our front door. It’s the little things that make them smile, which make us smile.
Until next time…Keep dreaming always…

Growing in my yard

Every year I dream of this gorgeous outdoor oasis in my backyard – filled with beautiful trees and flowers. Sitting on the deck enjoying the summer sun while the kids play in the kiddy pool.

With the yard being a mud-soil-clay mix, it’s been quite the task to grow anything new – even grass. Hubby threw grass seed last year, it took all summer to grow and this year, at least the center of the yard is green!

Trees have begun budding some even blooming and those mystery plants/flowers in my little flower garden seemed to have doubled in population and are growing once again…

Today, as I went to throw the kitchen garbage in the can I stopped to see what was growing in my back yard.

These are beautiful – from a tree in the yard, not quite sure what kind of tree. The blossoms are pretty but fragile – strong wind and they’re on the ground so I thought I’d photograph them while they’re here.

The mystery flowers, actually I think they are violets – growing by the bunches in my flower garden!

Last and really should be least, they aren’t flowers, we hate them and kids love picking them: Dandylions (lol) Thought I’d throw that one in for a smile 🙂

We will be finding out in a couple of weeks if the flower seeds we planted are going to take – unless the dog ruined them or the squirrels got them. Dd is hoping and wishing for them to grow so cross your fingers – we’ll have that oasis someday…

Until next time…keep dreaming

Talking toys

This week my parents-in-law came for a visit and brought a big surprise for the kids – a bunch of toys their cousins outgrew. I still need to go through two of the boxes…definitely have a garage sale, including the boxes already downstairs that contain toys that MY kids outgrew. Expect an upcoming post about that.

Back to my story – in one of these boxes of toys was a lovely bratz alarm clock, you know the talking ones. Nothing wrong with it by looking at it and the clock works.

I thought it was pretty cool, something dd didn’t have and it can maybe replace the spongebob clock (with the nose broken off) that she’s currently got. It was cool alright, until the thing freaked me right out this evening.

I went into dds room to tidy up, she had the clock plugged in and set up on her night stand. As I’m placing various Teddy bears back in their respective places in the plushy basket (which is on the opposite side to the night stand), the clock spoke. Randomly spoke.

All I hear is this girls voice say “yes?” – nobody was in the room but me and I hadn’t said a word. So I approach the clock, pick it up and without touching a single button the voice continues explaining instructions how to program the alarms ring. So I repeated the word “Bratz” like it said, nothing. I pressed all the buttons, spoke into the little mic hole and nothing! The toy is obviously broken (or possessed when plugged in). Needless to say I unplugged it and removed it from her room.

This reminded me of that scary “chucky” looking doll dd had about two years ago. The thing had matted hair, scuffed up face and stained clothes (she was brought out to the park a few times). Midnight one night I got up out of bed and was heading to the washroom all of a sudden I hear “Im hungry maa maa!” in that creepy doll voice. Everyone was fast asleep, dd had left her doll on the floor of the hall near her bedroom door, midnight snack maybe. Seriously, do these toys malfunction after time to scare us or what? At least the clock stopped talking when I unplugged it, now THAT would’ve been freaky!

Have any of you experienced the toys that make noise going off randomly? Share your story!
